Special Note
Officiating the first 30 minutes of pre-game
7 man crew of officials
We need to be consistent in our pre-game routine. The old “Military March” down the field has been gone for some time now and we still have crews doing that. Please build on the routine outlined below. Thanks so much for your willingness to adjust to this routine
30 minutes prior to kick off the crew of officials enter the field together and immediately form 3 groups:
Referee and Umpire go to meet eat coach /communicate the necessary information and tell them that the coin flip is taking place after both head coaches have been spoken to (coin flip no later than 20 minutes prior to kick off…except for special circumstances…please see page 189 of the mechanics book for the coin-flip)
Linesman and Side judge (and possibly back judge) can check line to gain equipment, meet the chain crew if present, check that side of the field, look for tinted shields and other illegal equipment
Line judge and Field judge check press box side of the field, look for tinted shields and other illegal equipment, covered knees, etc.
Back judge may wish to talk with the clock operator at this time or otherwise stick with the linesman and Side judge, check game balls.
Get the Captains!
Line judge and Field judge (press box side) and Side judge, Back judge and Linesman ( opposite press box ) Locate the captains on your side of the field and line them up. See page 189 for the flip.
After the flip, all can come together and exchange information then the LOS and deep wings can switch sides and repeat the above procedure. The Referee and Umpire can move to the side line where 2 officials are observing thus leaving 3 officials on the other side. With a job well done, 4 officials can spread out along the sideline and observe the home team warm-up while 3 officials may spread out along the side line and observe the visiting team warm-up
When one team leaves the field, the crew may also exit the field
To all new(and old) football officials
The information from the 2022 school is still on the website and is a great place(especially for new officials) to get some basic, practical training on RULES and MECHANICS.
Thanks
Phil and Joel
There is also a power point presentation on the school video page
